How this works. Each side is walked to 7 generations, the two pedigrees are overlaid, and every ancestor appearing on both sides is highlighted and listed in standard inbreeding notation. In the notation, the number counts generations back from the notional foal and the letter is the sex of the immediate descendant that ancestor produced at that point, with an x separating the stallion side from the mare side.

Six or seven generations. The pedigree opens at six. That is the depth that fits a screen without shrinking the names, and the depth most breeders read a cross at. Switch to seven in the pedigree bar when you want the extra column. The analysis does not move with the switch: duplicates are always found at seven generations and the table below the grid always lists every one of them, so a cross at 7m x 6f is reported whether or not the seventh column is on screen.

By sex, or cross colour duplicates. By sex is the default and the quicker read. A duplicated stallion shows blue and a duplicated mare shows pink, coloured by the horse's own sex and never by which side of the mating it sits on. Cross colour duplicates gives every duplicated ancestor a colour of its own, which is what you want when several crosses sit close together and you need to follow one horse down the page. Be aware of the limit: a pedigree carrying thirty or more duplicates asks for more colours than the eye can reliably separate, so read the name in the cell rather than the colour alone. The notation table is the authority either way.

The stallion list is NZSBA's own, taken from the Sires Register. Pedigrees come from HRNZ Infohorse.
